persuasion

: the process of creating, influencing, changing, or reinforcing people's beliefs, attitudes, values, and actions

 

pertinent

: appropriately related to the topic and the audience

 

place

: to explain to the audience about a place or setting

 

plan

: a detailed proposal for doing or achieving something

 

point of view

: an opinion, attitude, or judgment; the position from which one sees certain events or topics

 

policy

: a definite course of action adopted for the sake of expediency, facility; a course of action adopted and pursued by a government, ruler, or political party,

 

positive audience

: an audience that is knowledgeable about your topic and supports your opinion or proposed action already

 

practicality

: the aspects of a situation that involve the actual doing or experience of something rather than theories or ideas (i.e. tangible things an audience can do with ease)

 

purpose

: the main goal of the speech (to teach, explain, motivate, persuade, etc.)

 

reinforce

: the "restatement" of the thesis so the audience will remember the key points of the whole presentation

 

relevant

: a topic that might be new, helpful, or of particular interest to a specific audience

 

remembering

: the third stage of listening process which includes note taking, creating a visual image, or clustering information into meaningful categories so you can recall the speech at a later time

 

remember

: an engaging statement in the conclusion that is carefully and thoughtfully crafted to give the audience something to remember

 

repetition

: words or phrases are repeated throughout the text to emphasise certain facts or ideas

 

responding

: the sixth and final stage of the listening process which includes using nonverbal cues (nodding, slouching, smiling) while listening to a speaker, as well as asking questions after the speech

 

review

: a statement in the conclusion to go over the main points and provide a short snapshot of key takeaways

 

rhetoric

: the study of the effective use of language; the art of making persuasive speeches

 

scope

: the depth of a specific speech topic - how broad or narrow the focus is

 

sensory appeal

: words or phrases that reference the five senses: sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste

 

sensory overload

: when too much information is presented without allowing sufficient time for the audience to digest it
